PLATE OF THE UNION IS A COLLABORATIVE CAMPAIGN TO RAISE THE VOICES OF AMERICANS WHO THINK OUR FOOD POLICY SHOULD WORK FOR CONSUMERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT, NOT CORPORATE INTERESTS.
Every American has a right to healthy, affordable food and safe drinking water. But our current food policy isn’t focused on our health, it is focused on money. The system is rigged to subsidize the wealth of mega corporate farms or “Big Ag”, not our families, communities and farmland.
U.S. policies put their profits before our health and continue funding subsidies for the building blocks of junk food, like corn, and drive up chronic health problems, like obesity, diabetes and even cancer.
We need policies that recognize that healthy food is a necessity, not a privilege.
The farm bill is a sweeping piece of legislation that is responsible for shaping national policies that govern food production, environmental conservation, rural development and food assistance programs (i.e., SNAP). The farm bill affects everything from how your food is grown and what is costs at the grocery store, to the safety of your drinking water, to whether Americans have access to healthy, affordable food. Yet all too often, the farm bill ignores the needs of family farmers, hungry families, taxpayers and the environment, instead expanding subsidies for the largest and most successful farm businesses.
For the 2017 Plate of the Union campaign, EWG and FPA-EF have joined forces to create a new education and outreach campaign to inform consumers of the problems caused by agricultural policies, including the farm bill, and empower them to take action.

Food Policy Action-Education Fund
Food Policy Action-Education Fund's mission is to provide a platform for public education and engagement on the impacts federal policies have the food system. To advance solutions that support healthy food access and a safe, sustainable food system for all, FPA-EF will elevate the national dialogue on food issues through public education and issue advocacy.
History of Plate of the Union
The Plate of the Union 2016 campaign was created as a collaboration between the Union of Concerned Scientists, the HEAL Food Alliance and FPA-EF, and called on the next president to commit to taking bold action to reform our out-of-balance food system. Throughout the 2016 presidential election season, the partner organizations worked together to execute a unique public education campaign around the presidential election. Harnessing their respective strengths, they elevated the national conversation on food and agriculture policy to ensure that all Americans have access to healthy, affordable food – regardless of their zip code – that is fair to workers, keeps farmers on the land and protects our environment.
